- [Lorna Simpson](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/lorna-simpson/): Created for Manuela, Lorna Simpson’s ‘Quiet Storm’ (2024) is a site-specific wallpaper based on the artist’s ink and screenprint painting of the same name. A continuation of Simpson’s ongoing large-scale painting series, ‘Quiet Storm’ takes found imagery as its starting point. Beginning with a appropriated imagery from vintage Jet and Ebony magazines, Simpson superimposes and reconfigures the female face to reveal everyday American cultural stereotypes. “For me," she says, “the images hearken back to my childhood… are also a lens through which to see the past fifty years in American history”. Once digitally enlarged and screenprinted, the image is transferred onto a gessoed fiberglass board, at which point it is painted over with washes of ink. The result is something metonymic and surreal: “working with ink is very much about being in the moment, and as a result there’s a degree of subconsciousness that comes through”. Further symbolism is imbued by Simpson’s choice of palette, which is dominated by her characteristic selection of deep blues. Ranging from midnight blue to cobalt, navy and lapis, Simpson’s expressive strokes are both luminous and opaque. The resulting photo collage is what she describes as a “very simple exploration of my subconscious over the course of time”.

Founded in 2009, Project EATS aims to increase food sovereignty by growing and distributing fresh produce in New York City communities that have limited access to healthy nutritious food while also providing residents with farm and culinary opportunities for employment and management at PE and other farms and culinary enterprises. “Nothing has been more fulfilling,” Goode Bryant says of this work, “because I think this is what art is. - [Mika Rottenberg](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/mika-rottenberg/): ‘Chandelier for Manuela’ (2024) is a site-specific work, specially commissioned for Manuela, New York. Mika Rottenberg’s whimsical construction consists of a bar and chandelier, illuminated by lights that beam though mushroom-like colored orbs. Playful in both its color and composition, ‘Chandelier for Manuela’ provides restaurant guests with a social, aesthetic and conceptual gathering point.
- [Mary Heilmann](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/mary-heilmann/): Specially commissioned for Manuela, Mary Heilmann’s ‘Floating Tile Tables’ (2024) present a throughline to the artist’s longstanding interest in ceramics, furniture, and what she calls “home arts”. Situated throughout the restaurant’s bar and dining areas, Heilmann’s fifty-one tables exist in three colorways (red, yellow, green), and two shapes (square and round), with a modular design that can be combined to suit a range of groups. As a painter and ceramicist, Heilmann’s playful approach to color and geometric form is evident throughout the works, whose molded inlays are carved and placed with the utmost precision. Each table is topped with a tinted and treated oak surface that has been painstakingly milled on a CNC router to cup around the ceramic panels, which are comprised of grout and tiles. This process was managed by SITU Fabrication, a New York based studio that specializes in executing highly complex millwork projects. The coloured tiles are made by hand, glazed and fired by Powerhouse Arts, a not-for-profit ceramics studio, also based in New York. As the first example of Heilmann’s work designed for a commercial setting, great care has been taken to treat the table’s surfaces with a clear, protective polyurethane layer that enables their form to be married with their function. In 2026, the tables will be auctioned for charity.

Here, Simmons will debut a striking new wall drawing—his first major site-specific work in New York since his commission for The Drawing Center in 2018. The ambitious wall drawing will engage directly with a new series of paintings and studies on view, works that continue Simmons’ evolving exploration of racially charged cartoon imagery from the 1920s and 30s, while delving deeper into his signature motifs of disappearance, displacement, and disorientation.

Intertwining sustainability and community-based food systems with Soho's history as a home for seventeenth century colonizers and twentieth century conceptual artists alike, Goode Bryant created a dynamic "living installation" through both its behind the scenes composting initiative and informative window display. 
- [Rashid Johnson](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/rashid-johnson/): "Broken Men Table” (2024) is a site specific artwork and functional object, specially commissioned for Manuela, New York. At seven meters long and oval-shaped, Johnson’s first table, ‘Broken Men Table’ seats twenty-four diners. With a mosaic surface comprised of handmade artisanal and industrial tiles, spray paint and smashed mirrors, ‘Broken Men Table's' collage-like composition, cracked colors and abstracted faces recall Johnson’s ‘Anxious Men’ and ‘Broken Men’ series, in which the human figure is pushed to breaking point. Within these bustling compositions, rudimentary renderings of the human face are brought to the fore, their wild and agitated expressions speaking to both individual and collective identities against shifting social realities. Of these earlier works, Johnson has said, “I’m trying to illustrate tons of different people and at the same time they’re probably all me”.

- [Philip Guston](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/philip-guston/): Crescent is one of Guston’s major late paintings from 1976. It depicts Musa, the artist’s wife, as a heavenly body dominating and inspiring the artist’s inner landscape, flanked by the moon and sun at the horizon, above a rising red tide, and surrounded by a luminous blue sky that seems lit from within. Her saint-like green halo and upturned eyes are reminiscent of Renaissance painting, which Guston loved.

At once strange and familiar, ‘Landscape’s unsettling composition depicts elongated topiary, box hedges and cypress trees bathed in the pink light of a scarlet sun, their pale reflections hovering in a still pool of water beneath. Party’s fascination with the natural world is evident, as is his experience working as a 3D animator. “We’re so used to seeing computer-generated images now,” he says, “it has a big impact on how we see all images.” 
- [Cindy Sherman](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/cindy-sherman/): ‘Untitled #92’ (1981) is one such example, belonging to a series of large color photographs Sherman created to mimic the horizontal format of a magazine centerfold. Fraught with anxiety, the artist’s self-styled protagonist is backed into a corner. Panic-stricken, her figure instantly recalls the same terror expressed by Tippi Hedren in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, or Janet Leigh in Psycho. Sherman is crouched on the floor with no makeup and wet hair. Her costume, a plaid skirt and white blouse, brings to mind all the vulnerability of a school girl, whilst harsh lighting and the cinematically cropped frame deliberately masks the identity of her assailant.

- [Louise Bourgeois](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/louise-bourgeois/): Spider II (1995) is from a series Bourgeois began in the mid-1990s that takes the spider as its subject. Ranging from monumental installations to small-scale prints, her now iconic image originally appeared in a simple charcoal and ink drawing she made some fifty years earlier. For Bourgeois, the spider was symbolic of her mother, a tapestry restorer who rewove old tapestries like the spider weaves its web. She described her mother as her best friend and said, “she was deliberate, clever, patient, soothing, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat, and as useful as a spider.” Often represented as protectively carrying a sack of eggs, Bourgeois’s spiders are both vulnerable and poised, delicate and strong. They are among some of the most recognizable sculptures in the world. 
- [Pat Steir](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/pat-steir/): Since the 1970s, Pat Steir has created more than 50 wall drawings in museums, galleries, cultural institutions, and residences around the world. Specially commissioned for Manuela, ‘Song’ (2024) is Steir’s most recent site-specific installation.
- [Architecture & Design](https://manuela-nyc.com/journal/architecture-design/): Manuela’s design was led by Russell Sage Studios, who were also responsible for The Fife Arms and Fish Shop Ballater, two critically acclaimed Artfarm projects in Scotland. The interiors of the restaurant have been crafted with high eco-credentials across finishes, furniture and lighting. Timber and concrete throughout the project are original, stripped back and lightly re-sealed with non-toxic sealant, while plaster walls are made from unfired-natural clays and minerals to provide a breathable finish. All lighting and textiles, including leathers, are either vintage, recycled or off cuts.
