Philip Guston: Paintings and Drawings 1964–1978
Opening on April 21st at Hauser & Wirth’s 18th Street space, ‘Life with P.’ illuminates an intimate and rarely observed facet of Philip Guston’s art. The exhibition showcases a selection of Guston’s more intimate paintings and works on paper, ruminating on his marriage to poet Musa McKim and their lives together in Woodstock.
‘Life with P.’ coincides with the release of a new book from Hauser & Wirth Publishers by the same name, an illustrated compilation of Musa McKim’s previously unpublished journals from 1966–1976, contextualized by the couple’s daughter, Musa Mayer.
The exhibition is on display at Hauser & Wirth New York, 18th Street until 10 July 2026 – click here for directions.
You can also see Guston’s work on display at Manuela (Crescent, 1976).

‘Crescent’ is one of Guston’s major late paintings from 1976. It depicts Musa, the artist’s wife, as a heavenly body dominating and inspiring the artist’s inner landscape, flanked by the moon and sun at the horizon, above a rising red tide, and surrounded by a luminous blue sky that seems lit from within. Her saint-like green halo and upturned eyes are reminiscent of Renaissance painting, which Guston loved.
